Essential Apps to Make Everyday Life in Seoul Easier
Living in Seoul becomes much easier once you have the right apps on your phone. From finding your way around the city and ordering food to calling a taxi and translating Korean, a few essential apps can make everyday life much more convenient.
If you are new to Seoul, these are some of the apps worth downloading first.
1. Naver Map — Navigation & Local Search
Naver Map (네이버 지도) is one of the most useful apps for everyday life in Korea.
You can use it to find subway and bus routes, walking directions, restaurants, cafés, hospitals, supermarkets, and almost any local business. Google Maps can still be useful, but Naver Map is particularly practical for navigating Korea’s local transportation and businesses.
Best for: Maps, public transportation, restaurants, local businesses
2. KakaoTalk — Messaging
KakaoTalk (카카오톡) is one of the most important communication apps in Korea.
You may use it to communicate with friends, colleagues, landlords, real estate agents, delivery drivers, and service providers. It is useful to have KakaoTalk ready even before you arrive in Korea.
Best for: Messaging, calls, group chats, communication
3. Papago — Korean Translation
Papago, developed by Naver, is particularly useful for communicating in Korean.
You can translate text, conversations, menus, signs, and images. The camera translation function is especially helpful when reading Korean documents or restaurant menus.
Best for: Korean translation, menus, signs, documents
4. Kakao T / Taxi Apps — Getting Around
Taxis are easy to use in Seoul, and taxi apps make the process even more convenient.
Kakao T is widely used in Korea, while international users may also consider services such as k.ride or Uber, depending on their phone number and payment method. Seoul Metropolitan Government provides information on both domestic and international taxi-app options for foreign residents and visitors.
Best for: Taxi booking, fare estimates, convenient transportation
5. Seoul Subway — Subway Routes
Seoul’s subway system is extensive, so a subway app can be useful when you are still learning the city.
The official Seoul Subway app provides route information, transfer guidance, travel times, and station-related information. You can also use Naver Map for subway routes, so a separate subway app is optional.
Best for: Subway routes, transfers, travel times
6. Baemin — Food Delivery
Ordering food is a major part of everyday life in Seoul.
Baemin (배달의민족) is one of Korea’s major food-delivery platforms. Current services also provide options that are more accessible to international users, including English-language support and overseas-card payment options.
Best for: Restaurant delivery, takeout
7. Coupang — Shopping & Household Essentials
Coupang is useful for ordering everything from household products and toiletries to electronics and groceries.
For foreigners, the availability of certain account and payment features can depend on having a Korean phone number and identity verification, so your experience may differ before and after settling into Korea.
Best for: Online shopping, household items, groceries
8. Karrot — Second-Hand Shopping
Karrot (당근) is a neighborhood-based second-hand marketplace. It can be especially useful when you are moving into a new home and need furniture, appliances, or other household items.
However, the service is primarily Korean-language, and some account features may require local verification.
Best for: Second-hand furniture, appliances, local deals
9. T-money / Public Transportation
A transportation card is essential for using Seoul’s subway and buses.
You can use T-money and other approved transportation options, while Seoul also offers various transportation passes depending on your circumstances and length of stay.
Best for: Subway, buses, everyday transportation
10. Banking & Government Apps
Once you have settled in Korea, you may also want to install your bank’s mobile app, Toss, Kakao Pay, and relevant government services such as HiKorea or Gov24.
Keep in mind that financial and government services often require a Korean phone number, an Alien Registration Card, or identity verification. You may not be able to use every feature immediately after arrival.
Apps to Install First
If you are arriving in Seoul for the first time, you don’t need to download everything at once.
Start with:
Naver Map + KakaoTalk + Papago + a taxi app
Then add food delivery, shopping, transportation, banking, and other apps as you settle into your new home.
The right apps can make everything from finding your apartment to ordering dinner much easier.
